Jamstik Creator Release Notes

Mac OS:

Follow the instructions in the video above to install the Jamstik Creator on MacOS.

Make sure that your mac's security settings allow installing apps from non-app store locations and right-click (or control-click) on the Install Jamstik Creator.pkg file and click open if it does not install the first time.

The Sound Library is now installed inside of the Creator. If for some reason it did not install on first launch, click the cloud icon in the preset browser to check for updates to the sound library.

The Installer also automatically installed the VST3 Jamstik Creator plugins so you can go straight to your DAW after install to run the Jamstik Creator as a plugin in your DAW as well as through the standalone app.

Windows:

Follow the instructions in the video above to install the Jamstik Creator on Windows.

Make sure that you allow the installer to run in any windows pop-up that may come up in the install process.

Language Selection

As of version 1.52 (May 2024 Update), Jamstik Creator includes translations for English, Español (Spanish), Français (French), Deutsch (German), Português (Portuguese), Italiano (Italian), 繁体字 (Traditional Chinese), 普通话 (Simplified Chinese), and 日本語 (Japanese).

If you are opening the update for the first time, you should be asked to select a language when opening the Jamstik Creator. After selecting a new language, you will need to close and reopen Jamstik Creator for the language change to take effect.

To select a different language, click the Menu (☰) button in the top left of the Jamstik Creator to expand the menu list, and then Language Selection (🌐) at the bottom of the list. 

Then select the language you want the Creator to use. Click Ok when you have selected the language and then close and reopen the Jamstik Creator to display the new language.

Once the Creator is reopened, text of the Jamstik Creator should now be in the chosen language (certain fields such as artist names, preset names and descriptions, sampler instrument names, and certain assignable parameters such as macros and CC assignments are not currently translated). If you wish to submit a correction or error in a translated language's text, submit a request at support.jamstik.com making sure that the "Issue Category" field is marked as "Translation Error".

 

Connecting Your Jamstik to the Creator:

IMPORTANT: In AUv3, AAX, or VST3 mode, Jamstik connection for MIDI input is handled by your DAW and may require a small amount of setup depending on your DAW - Visit the DAW Setup Guides for more information.
Also check the Jamstik Creator: Third-Party DAW Compatibility Database for updated information on available capabilities for the Jamstik Creator in your DAW.

When running the Creator in standalone mode (not inside a DAW) for the first time, the Audio/MIDI preferences window should pop up automatically.

To connect after first launch, open the Audio/MIDI Preferences window from the Audio/MIDI button on the top bar, the Audio/MIDI Preferences Entry in the top-left dropdown menu, or by clicking Preferences/Settings in either in the file drop-down on windows or the Jamstik Creator dropdown on mac system menu bar.

Make sure your preferred audio output device is selected in the dropdown (set the driver type to either WASAPI or ASIO on windows for the best experience) and select the checkbox for your Jamstik under MIDI Device. Your Jamstik may appear of Jamstik MIDI OUT, Jamstik (possibly followed by a number), or a different name. There should also be a greyed-out Jamstik device usually named Jamstik CONFIG OUT or MIDIIN2 (Jamstik). This is the Jamstik's secondary port and is used for adjusting settings through the Jamstik Service and allows settings to be changed on your Jamstik while in your DAW.

Jamstik Firmware Updates

If you experience issues at any step in the firmware update process, ensure you are connected over USB and not Bluetooth (firmware updates over Bluetooth are not possible at this time), and visit Firmware Update Troubleshooting for more help.

Versions of Jamstik Creator at or above 1.50 that are connected to the internet can now update Jamstik MIDI Guitar device firmware over a USB connection. The entire update process takes less than 5 minutes and is strongly recommended for all Jamstik users to keep their Jamstik MIDI Guitars updated whenever possible for playability enhancements, improved tracking, bug fixes, third-party compatibility, and new features.

After connecting a Jamstik MIDI Guitar to the Creator with an out-of-date firmware while connected to the internet, a pop-up should appear regarding firmware updates as well as an update available badge in the connection tab. The firmware update page can be launched by clicking either of these or Check for Firmware Update in the dropdown menu.

 

Once the Jamstik Firmware Update page has launched, click Start Update and your Jamstik should finish updating in less than 5 minutes.

Once the update is complete, your Jamstik's LED lights may continue flashing for a bit. Once the LEDs have turned off, press the power button on your Jamstik THEN open Audio/MIDI Preferences and reconnect your Jamstik.

If you have experienced issues at any step in the process, ensure you are connected over USB and not Bluetooth (firmware updates over Bluetooth are not possible at this time), and visit Firmware Update Troubleshooting for more help.

Detailed Overview Video

Running Jamstik Creator in a DAW:

The Jamstik Creator plugin is able to be run as a standalone application as well as an AUv3 Audio Unit plugin on Mac as well as a VST3 or AAX plugin on Windows and Mac. By default, the installer will install these in the default system folders but this can be changed during install. The plugins can be added to a DAW the same way any other 64 bit VST3 plugin is added. Below are detailed step-by-step guides for some of the popular DAWs, but third-party tutorials on "using VST plugins in [DAW]" should apply. Visit our DAW Setup Guides for guides on some of the most common DAWs.

Features, Functions & Controls:

Preset Browser

When the creator launches, it will open to the preset browser. Here you can play with the over 100 included presets that have been custom-designed for the Jamstik MIDI Guitars using the Jamstik Creator. 

You can filter the presets by type and instruments to narrow down the list as well as click the star button next to presets to add them to your favorites.

Starring Presets will create a new option under Type called Starred. Here you can find all the presets you've starred for quick access.

Save

Once you have created your own preset or modified settings you wish to keep or share, you can click Save Preset in the Creator top-left menu dropdown or Save in the Preset Browser.

Here you can change your preset's name, the author name for the preset, write a custom description that will appear in the Preset Browser, as well as the family(s) that your preset will appear in in the Jamstik Creator preset browser.

To save your preset into the Jamstik Creator click Save. To export your preset as a .jsp file that you can share with others, click export. These presets and others can be imported into your Creator by clicking load in the Preset Browser.

Once saved, your preset shows us in the "User" type in the left-hand column as well as "All Downloaded Packs".

Jamstik Creator Preferences

The Jamstik Creator Preferences page is accessible by clicking Jamstik Creator Preferences in the top left dropdown menu of the Jamstik Creator Window. Here you can change MIDI settings that will take effect across the Creator.

MIDI Controller Settings:

MIDI Device Mode:

Make sure that this setting matches the setting of the MIDI device you are using in the Jamstik Creator. In many cases, changing this setting will also change the setting on your Jamstik MIDI Guitar (if it is currently connected to the Creator). However, it may not in certain DAWs, in this case, make sure to change your device settings in the standalone as well.

• Single-Channel: Single-Channel Mode is compatible with most DAWs and VSTs and the default on most MIDI controllers.
• Multi-Channel: Multi-Channel mode allows strings on the Jamstik MIDI Guitar to be split into 6 different channels. Few MIDI controllers will operate in this mode.
• MPE Mode: The Jamstik was built to send expression on 6 channels. MPE mode allows even greater individual note control and expression. MPE MIDI controllers are somewhat rare but are compatible with the Jamstik Creator if this mode is selected.

Studio MIDI Device Settings:

This button will take you to the Device Settings panel in the Jamstik Creator.

Pitch Bend Range:

Advanced Feature: If the pitch bend range is changed for the Creator and does not match your Jamstik or other MIDI device's pitch bend range, the resulting MIDI output will not accurately reflect what you are playing.

Here you can change the Pitch Bend Range of your Jamstik MIDI Guitar as well as the pitch bend range that the Creator looks for.

Audio/MIDI Preferences (Standalone Only):

Clicking this in Standalone mode will launch the preferences panel where you can select audio devices and settings as well as MIDI controller. In your DAW, these settings are handled in your DAW's audio/MIDI settings or preferences menu.

System CC Assignments:

Here you can set CC assignments on external MIDI controllers to perform basic functions inside of the Jamstik Creator. Either type the CC number in the drop-down or click MIDI Learn and then adjust the CC control to assign it to a function.

Macro CC Assignments:

Here you can set CC assignments on external MIDI controllers to perform macro adjustments inside of the Jamstik Creator. Either type the CC number in the drop-down or click MIDI Learn and then adjust the CC control to assign it to a function.

Changing these settings will map CCs to the associated Macros for all presets in the Jamstik Creator. Generally, Macro 1 will be the most important macro in the factory presets.

Jamstik Device Settings

To access your Jamstik's Device Settings, click on the 'Device Settings' icon on the top bar or Jamstik Device Settings in the top-left menu dropdown.

 

MIDI Controls

MIDI Modes:

• MPE Mode: The Jamstik was built to send expression on 6 channels. MPE mode allows even greater individual note control and expression.
• Single-Channel: Single-Channel Mode is compatible with most DAWs and VSTs
• Multi-Channel: Multi-Channel mode allows strings to be split into 6 different channels

If your Jamstik MIDI Guitar's firmware is up to date, you can also double press your device's power button to cycle between Single Channel and MPE MIDI Mode.

First MIDI Channel:

Controls the MIDI Channel for Single Channel Mode and the first of 6 channels for the guitar on Multi-Channel mode. This cannot be changed on MPE mode as MPE uses MIDI Channels 2-7 for strings. 

 

Pitch Bend Send:

Sends string bend information from guitar to external DAW and VSTs as Pitch Bend (On MPE/Multi-Channel Mode, pitch bend is on a per-channel basis).

 

Pitch Bend Range:

Warning: If your device's pitch bend range is changed and does not match your VST or the Creator's pitch bend range, the resulting MIDI output will not accurately reflect what you are playing.

Here you can change your Jamstik MIDI Guitar's Pitch Bend Range (Firmware update may be required). This will let you use other VSTs and Hardware synthesizers and have them accurately reflect your pitch bends.

For reference, most VSTs have a default pitch bend range of ±2 while the MPE standard is ±48. 

 

String Envelope Send (USB Connection Only): 

String Envelope Send (Expression Tracking Send on previous versions of the Jamstik Creator) sends amplitude/aftertouch information from guitar to external DAW and VSTs. These values are tracked and sent per-string and per-channel when this is turned on. In the case of Jamstik Creator, this is used to change the volume of the notes being played to follow the amplitude of the sound being played from the guitar on presets and instruments where Expression Volume Mod is turned on and the String Envelope Mapping is set to 11: Expression (the default value). This produces a more "string-like" decay and cut-off for the produced sounds. This also allows for more natural effects when using playing methods like muting or palm muting.

 

String Envelope Mapping:

Warning: Presets in the Jamstik Creator and Oscillator Instruments with Expression Volume Mod enabled listen for CC11 Expression. If this value is changed, the Creator will not respond to string envelope until this value is changed back to 11: Expression.

String Envelope Mapping maps string envelope information to specific MIDI controls. 4 Default mappings are available in the drop-down and any MIDI CC number can be typed in the box for specific controllers.

Drop-down values:

• Expression: Uses CC11 Expression for string envelope mapping. This is used in the Jamstik Creator in many presets as well as with the Expression Volume Mod in the Oscillator Instrument. It is used similarly in many other third-party software instruments.
• Channel Pressure: Channel Pressure is used by many third-party MPE VSTs usually for a volume swell or fade effect. Roli uses Channel Pressure for their Press value in Equator2 and the rest of their MPE software instruments.
• Volume: Uses CC7 Volume for string envelope mapping. Some third-party software or hardware synthesizers will listen for this value and adjust the volume. This can create a guitar-like decay with minimal setup.
• Sound Ctrl 2: Uses CC71 for string envelope mapping. CC71 is often mapped to and used for resonance in third party software and hardware.

 

Octaves/Semitones Transpose:

The octave and semitone allow you to transpose the MIDI output of the Jamstik MIDI Guitar without retuning the guitar. 

 

Sensitivity

String Sensitivity:

String sensitivity can be adjusted using the Master String Sensitivity slider, or on an individual string basis. This setting changes how likely it is that a note will be registered as a midi note. Higher sensitivity values will result in more MIDI notes being registered while lower sensitivity values will better filter out accidental high fret brushes and other unintentional notes.

MIDI Velocity Limits:

Restricts the MIDI velocity outputs of the Jamstik.  For example, if min MIDI Velocity is set to 25 and a note is played that would normally be at velocity 7 is played, that note will instead have a velocity value of 25. Notes with velocities normally inside the range selected will not be changed. Setting both values to the same velocity will result in all notes being the same MIDI velocity.

Tuning

String Open Note Tuning:

Use of this feature requires physically retuning your guitar.

String Open Note Tuning allows you to play your Jamstik in tunings other than standard tuning (EADGBe). To change tunings you must change the note values for each string in the dropdowns as well as retune your guitar. Common tunings are available as presets in the dropdown.

To tune your guitar, make sure your Device Settings are set to MPE Mode and Pitch Bend Send is active. Then strum your guitar and tune with the provided tuner visual feedback. The tuner for that string will show if you are flat or sharp, and approximately how many cents. For more information on tuning your Jamstik MIDI Guitar see our full article on tuning.

Octaves/Semitones Transpose:

The octave and semitone allow you to transpose the MIDI output of the Jamstik MIDI Guitar without retuning the guitar. (These are identical to the Transpose functions found in MIDI Controls and are doubled here for convenience).

Advanced Options

Sleep Timers:

This controls how many minutes of inactivity can occur before the Studio MIDI Guitar switches into sleep mode. You can also disable the sleep timer or have "unlimited time" until the Jamstik shuts off by typing zero in the box or navigating to the farthest left or right value of the sleep timer.

Wired Sleep Timer controls the sleep time when the Jamstik is plugged into to a power source or computer through USB.

Wireless Sleep Timer controls the sleep timer when the Jamstik is not plugged in by USB but is either sending MIDI through Bluetooth or TRS-MIDI.

Bluetooth Enabled:

For studio environments where a Bluetooth signal may cause interference, you can turn off the Jamstik MIDI Guitar's Bluetooth signal. Changing this value will force the Jamstik to restart.

Left-Handed Mode

Flips the fretboard for left-handed models of the Studio MIDI Guitar.

Transcription Mode

Transcription mode improves accuracy and filters out unwanted MIDI notes at the cost of adding 30-40 extra milliseconds of latency and disabling some performance features like hammer-ons. This mode is primarily meant for recording rather than performing and a lower buffer size and ASIO drivers on Windows is strongly recommended in this mode.

Check for Firmware Update

Launches the Jamstik Firmware Update page and allows you to update your Jamstik's device firmware in Jamstik Creator.

Reset Tuning

Resets the Open Note String Tunings to Standard (EADGBe).

Reset to Factory Settings

Resets all Jamstik MIDI Guitar settings to factory settings.

Demo Mode

Demo mode is a feature designed for exhibition use that resets a Jamstik's settings after a period of inactivity. You can change the amount of time between resets and whether it changes back to a single channel or MPE mode.

Device Diagnostics

Jamstik Device information meant for internal use/debugging.

Calibration

In the calibration menu found in the top-left dropdown menu, you can tune your guitar as well as check the velocities of your MIDI data.

 

Note: If data is not showing up or only showing up on one string on this page like below, go into Device Settings and set your guitar to MPE Mode and make sure pitch bend send and amplitude tracking send is on.

String Velocity

String velocity shows the MIDI velocity that is being sent from each input. You can use this to check your velocities for each playing style and it can also be a helpful tool for use while physically adjusting your guitar for best performance. When you play loudly, the notes should register in the red. When you play quietly, the notes should register at the bottom of the yellow. 

Min MIDI Velocity/Max MIDI Velocity

Restricts the MIDI velocity outputs of the Jamstik.  For example, if min MIDI Velocity is set to 25 and a note is played that would normally be at velocity 7 is played, that note will instead have a velocity value of 25. Notes with velocities normally inside the range selected will not be changed. This option and per-string tuning adjustments are available through Jamstik Device settings and are doubled here for convenience.

 

Editing Instruments and Effects

The editor tab is active any time an instrument or effect panel is open. Clicking the editor tab when on another tab will open the first instrument in the Instrument rack. The editor for an individual effect or instrument can also be accessed directly from the Instrument and Effects panels at any time.

Right below the Menu Bar are the Instruments and Effects panels. These scrollable panels will show all the currently active instruments and effects in your current setting or preset. You can also click on New Effect or New Instrument at the right side of each of these panels to add an additional effect or instrument to your setting.

At the top left of an Instrument or effect element is the Remove button - this will delete the instrument or effect and its settings from your current setting.

In the middle is the power button. You can click on the power button to change it from active (blue) to inactive (grey).

In the top right of instrument elements, there is a quick volume knob. You can use this while building presets to quickly change the volume of instruments.

To see a view of the settings associated with the instrument or effect, click on the name or anywhere else in the grey element.

it should then light up with a blue outline and open the instrument or effect controls below in the space where the preset browser was. To get back to the preset browser, either click Browser or the Preset name on the top menu bar.

MIDI Panic

If at any point you have a stuck note while playing, click the MIDI Panic button in the menu bar and the note will be silenced.

Volume

 

The volume control on the menu bar controls the master output volume of the creator. The current value is shown when dragging the white circle.

Creator Options: 

Tempo Settings:

Here you can change the tempo that presets and the assignable controls are synced to. By default when running in a DAW, the Use DAW Project Tempo will be enabled. This makes sure that the modulating instruments of the Creator match the tempo of any project you are working on.

MIDI Compatibility Mode:

This breaks up the MIDI notes from a single channel MIDI controller into guitar strings in the Jamstik Creator. This allows third-party MIDI controllers to play sampler instruments that have samples mapped to specific strings. It also allows MIDI notes to be shown on the on-screen fretboard for these MIDI controllers on more strings than just String 1. 

• • • The toggle for this mode will not appear when a Jamstik is connected in MPE mode.
    • You may also want to use this setting while in Ableton Live 10/11 or Studio One where MPE is not properly implemented and channels are not maintained Jamstik Creator: Third-Party DAW Compatibility Database.

Instruments and Effects:

Oscillators 

Wave Types

The oscillator instrument can be made of 1 of 5 wave types - Sine, Square, Triangle, Sawtooth, or Noise.

Polyphony 

There are 3 polyphony settings: Monophonic - Allows one note to be triggered at a time, notes will slide to each other at the speed of the portamento control. Monophonic channels - Only one note allowed at a time per channel. If you are in MPE or Multi Channel mode, each string can have its own note at a time and slide between them. Polyphonic - allows multiple notes to be played at once regardless of their channel.

Wave Settings

Transpose, Coarse and Fine all control the oscillator's pitch, while Portamento controls the amount of time it takes to slide pitch from note to note on the monophonic modes.

ADSR Envelope

These settings control when and how the oscillator's sound starts and ends. You can control each node with the knobs or by dragging the nodes themselves.

Expression Volume Mod:

This toggles expression tracking for the current Creator oscillator instrument. This requires Expression Tracking Send (USB Connection Only) to be turned on and String Envelope Mapping to be set to Expression in device settings and. Expression refers to amplitude/aftertouch information from the guitar as Expression (CC11). These values are sent per-string and per-channel when this is turned on. In the case of Jamstik Creator, this is used to change the volume of the notes being played to follow the amplitude of the sound being played from the guitar. This produces a more "string-like" decay and cut off for the produced sounds. This also allows for more natural effects when using playing methods like muting or palm muting.

Filter

 

These settings work as a one band eq for and individual oscillator instrument at a time. 

 

Sampled Instruments

Browser:

Here you can add any of our professionally sampled instruments into your current settings. Many of these instruments are made of large, high-quality samples and take some time to load.

General:

In the top right of the General tab you can change the sample's polyphony setting:

Mono/Monophonic - Allows one note to be triggered at a time, notes will slide to each other at the speed of the portamento control.

Mono Channel/Monophonic channels - Only one note allowed at a time per channel. If you are in MPE or Multi Channel mode, each string can have its own note at a time and slide between them.

Poly/Polyphonic - allows multiple notes to be played at once regardless of their channel.

Transpose, Coarse and Fine all control the sampler instrument's pitch.

 

Envelopes:

Optional ADSR Envelope:

These settings control when and how the sampler instrument's sound starts and ends. You can control each node with the knobs or by dragging the nodes themselves after enabling the envelope in the top left of the pane.

Effects

The Jamstik Creator ships with 10 different effects - Amp Simulation, Bitcrusher, Chorus, Compressor, Delay, Distortion, EQ, Flanger, Phaser, and Reverb.

These are applied to the output of all instruments and are applied in order from left to right in the effects panel list. 

We encourage you to experiment with these effects and see how we are using them by clicking on them when they show up in our presets. 

Amp Simulation

The Amp Sim effect will replicate the sound of plugging your synth into a guitar amplifier. This effect also gives you similar tools found on popular amplifiers such as drive and a three-band EQ.

Bitcrusher

The Bitcrusher allows you to alter the bit rate of the incoming signal (usually to degrade it). This can be useful when emulating classic video game tones or, when used subtly, to warm up synth sounds and help them stick out in the mix.

Chorus

The Chorus effect simulates multiple voices performing the same part. It can create a nice rich sound on lead lines and pads. 

Compressor

The Compressor allows you to control the dynamics of the incoming signal. When applied to synthesized sounds, it can be used to further shape the transients of the signal, creating harder attacks and longer sustain.

Delay

The delay effect is a simple effect that can be used to create a wide range of textures. This can be used rhythmically or to wash the sounds out

Distortion

The Distortion effect gives you more ways to degrade the incoming audio signal. Use this liberally to create screaming leads or conservatively to add warmth and saturation.

EQ

The Equalizer gives you the tools to get surgical and shape where the sound will sit in the mix. This effect can also be used creatively by imposing new sonic colors or pairing the parameters to LFO’s.

Flanger

The Flanger can be used to add an interesting movement and depth to your incoming signal. Particularly effective on long sustained notes or pads.

Phaser

The Phaser, while very similar to the Flanger, can create a more subtle movement and depth. Great on keys and electric guitar sounds.

Reverb

The Reverb effect will simulate the characteristics of different rooms, spaces, or plates. This effect can be used to achieve natural reverberation or to artificially wash the sound out completely.

Modulators

To create varied, dynamic sounds and presets, you can use the assignable controls on the right side of an active instrument controls window. Currently built-in to the Creator are options for 6 Macros, 6 LFOs, and 6 ADSRs as well as custom assignable CC controls.

 

 

Assigning Parameters to Modulators

Clicking on the Report Issue button in the bottom left corner of the Creator will take you to a page where you can report any issues you may find with the Creator while using. It is recommended to first check the known issues in Jamstik Creator Release Notes to see if the issue you're experiencing is a known issue or has a suggested workaround already!

I'm seeing an "Installation Error" message while installing the VST.

Or, The Preset browser isn't showing any instruments upon opening up the Jamstik Creator Plugin.

If you see a message pop-up during installation stating, "Unable to write to preferences cache, please restart and try installing again." or, the preset browser is missing all of the instruments upon opening up the Creator plugin, your computer may have fallen asleep or encountered an error during the Sound Library download process. Simply run the "Install Sound Library" again. Wait for the installation process to say "Done" and then try opening up the Jamstik Creator Plugin from your Applications a second time.
